Work underway on Railroad Street

Motorists driving along Railroad Street in downtown Seneca may notice that some grass has been cleared out.  That is because an area has been marked for a shelter and charging station for the new all-electric CAT buses, explains Seneca Planning and Community Development Director Ed Halbig. “We selected Zorn as our contractor and so they will be coming in and re-doing the sidewalks and the concrete drive for the buses.  We have some utilities that we still need to relocate that are down there, so you see some of the sod is stripped away.  Mike Greenman in the Engineering Department and his folks have done a great job of lying out and staking it, so that Zorn can come in and follow in behind them to get the necessary infrastructure put in place.” Halbig does not expect traffic to be detoured away from Railroad Street once street work begins.  “I don’t think it is going to be closed off, there will probably some traffic direction with flagmen keeping the flow going through but we don’t expect any interruption there or at the hospital.” A new charging station is also being installed on the grounds of Oconee Medical Center.  If you have yet to ride a CAT bus, what are you waiting for, concludes Halbig.  “It is a fantastic service, if you haven’t ridden it; you need to ride it because there is really no reason not to.” The new all-electric CAT buses are anticipated to arrive in Seneca in late October or early November and the city is planning a ceremony to officially welcome them to town.
